Pure 'Class A' Headphone Amp and Preamp
The Musical Fidelity M1 HPA-P uses a pure 'Class A' amplifier design along with a high-current, low-noise power supply to deliver the utmost in musical performance. It can also serve as a high-performance desktop preamp thanks to its two line-level inputs, USB input, and variable line output. It also contains two headphone jacks on the front panel and a loop-out facility. The M1 HPA-P improves on its predecessor, the M1 HPA, by offering a second line-level input.
Musical Fidelity has a long history of making superlative headphone amplifiers, and the M1 HPA-P pure Class A headphone amp is a worthy successor to this tradition. Its technical performance is outstanding, with incredibly low distortion (less than .0005% across the band) and frequency response that's ruler flat. The noise ratio and every other technical parameter are outstanding, as well.
A headphone amp's output impedance is a often ignored, but it's a very important measurement. The HPA-P has very low output impedance (below 1 ohm), and this extraordinary low figure means it can drive any headphone with complete linearity and low distortion. The vast majority of competitive headphone amplifiers cannot do this because their output impedance is much higher.
The USB input uses a circuit much like that found in the M6i integrated amp and the M6PRE pre-amp. It accepts CD-resolution data (up to 16-bit, 48 kHz) and is processed by a 16-bit DAC with 8x oversampling. The USB input is the USB 1.1 version with full-speed transceivers. A highly accurate 12-MHz clock source insures low jitter, while the 16-bit Delta-Sigma stereo DAC has very low distortion and excellent signal to noise ratio.
